New gear and the taper

This morning I started out on my last long-is run before the marathon.  I took it nice and easy; I am trying to respect the taper.  But really, tapering kind of sucks and I added in a few extra miles this week - it is just so hard to cut back now, I'm ready to run this thing!  But deep down, I know I need to let my body recover to be ready for the exertion I expect of it next weekend.

I tried out some of the new gear I picked up at the Brooksie Way expo.  I am most excited about the arm sleeves - I've wanted a pair for over a year now, and I think I will wear them for the marathon next weekend.  They are treadwear and were only $15 (about half the price of others I've seen).  I like that I can easily hang these from my fuel belt when I get warm, and I don't have to try and take off a shirt over my head while running.  These are the Tech Series which are moisture wicking and they double as hand warmers with their foldover cuff - very cool!
Look ma, no hands!

I picked up a Bondi Band for $7, since I am too lazy to order a Bic Band online.  I hear great things about the Bics (and they have bands with glitter!), but the Bondi is supposed to help wick away some sweat and I always end up with some sweat stinging my eyes by the end of a long run.  I wore this under my hat, and I think it helped.  I have tried it without the hat as well, and it doesn't slide around or fall off - a BIG plus.  I also picked up a new running short sleeve shirt - this one is Mizuno, and I bought it solely for the color.  I needed something to match my socks.  :)  I think my marathon outfit will probably look very similar to what I wore today - except for black shorts instead of blue.  I wore my fuel belt loaded up and want to test to make sure nothing shifted around too much.

So here is how the last week looked for a total of 22.01 miles.  It was technically the second week of the taper, I have 3-4 more short easy runs this week before the race next Sunday.

M 10/3: Rest
Tu 10/4: 4.29 easy, 39:56, 9:18 pace
W 10/5: 4.67 easy, 43:33, 9:19 pace
Th 10/6: 4.12 easy, 38:40, 9:22 pace; 15 min Ab Ripper X, 15 min light lifting for arms, chest, shoulders
F 10/7: Rest
Sa 10/8: 8.93 long, 1:26:00, 9:38 pace

And... its football Saturday!  So here are my picks:
10 pts: Stanford over Colorado
9 pts: Oklahoma over Texas
8 pts: Nebraska over Ohio St
7 pts: Arkansas over Auburn
6 pts: Virginia Tech over Miami
5 pts: Arizona State over Utah
4 pts: Georgia over Tennessee
3 pts: Iowa over Penn St
2 pts: Texas A&M over Texas Tech
1 pt: Missouri over Kansas St

UPDATE: 51 points for the week, my best week of the year, but still only good enough for 8th place in my group.  Good week for everyone, lots of people with 1 low-point miss.  Josh is hanging onto first by a point.

And the ALCS Game 1 is tonight... with JV on the mound, I predict a Tigers victory! Major bummer.

Maybe I jinxed it

I was talking myself into pregnancy symptoms this time around.  But then a negative pregnancy test yesterday was confirmed by a blood test today.  Not pregnant.

Exhaustion: Guess I just stayed up too late a few too many night this week watching the Tigers games that started at 8:37 pm and lasted a ridiculous 4 plus hours most of the time
Heartburn: Probably that buffalo chicken wrap that was way spicier than I remember
Lack of breakout: Oh wait, that still happened, just a few days later than usual

I guess that's not that many symptoms after all.  Maybe I jinxed the whole thing, not once but twice:

Last Saturday, I saw a killer deal on Baby Legs - they were offering 75% off a purchase of $75 or more, and shipping is free if you spend over $30.  This is an awesome price on these oh-so-cute little legwarmers that are usually way overpriced at $10-$12 each, so at $2.50-$3, I figured I would stock up.  Guess what showed up on our porch on Friday:
Aren't they so stinking cute?!??  If I don't get a baby soon I might have to try these on Lucy...

And then on Friday, after the pee test but before the news was confirmed by the doctor, I stopped at Target on my way home from work to see if I could get any good deals with the $3 off any Liz Lange maternity item coupons I had.  Look what I found, all for less than $10:
Jeans(!) for $4.48,  khaki shorts for $3.24, and purple racerback tank for $1.98,.  Not bad!!!

So I know that I am ridiculous.  I obviously didn't jinx this non-pregnancy.  And I've spent $40 on pregnancy and baby related things this week (but in my defense, that stuff is worth over $210!!!).  But I've still been crying all night.

I never in a million years thought I would be in this position.  After we were dating for a while, Josh would tell me he wanted 12 kids - Cheaper by the Dozen is still his favorite kid movie.  He was half-joking (I think), but once I told him, "We don't even know if we can have kids together."  (Heck, maybe I jinxed the whole thing back then....)  But I didn't mean it.  Those words haunt me now.  I never really thought we would have a problem.  And here we are, trying to figure out what to do next.

This weekend, Josh and I have to talk about IVF.  Are we ready?  Is that the step we want to take?  We have delayed this decision as long as possible, continuing to try Clomid even though our RE said the likelihood of success was low.  There is the financial side to consider as well. [Ugh, I could write an entire rant about this alone - my friend gets a boob job covered by insurance and it could cost us thousands to conceive a baby.  Viagra is covered by many insurance companies, but Clomid or hCG - not covered.  Ugh!]  It might sound ironic to ask for prayers as we make this decision, given the church's stance on ART and all, but we sure could use them.

My favorite website for the next 9 days

Weather stalking has begun:
You can find me over on weather.com for the next 9 days or so, checking the marathon forecast approximately 784 times a day.  So far, I'm thankful I'm not running Chicago in this mini-heat wave we are experiencing this weekend and I'm just praying that temps stay where they are predicting - or even lower.

My ideal forecast: 50-57 degrees, sun, no wind.  Belle Isle can be a bitch in the wind, so I hear.

Brooksie Way Half Marathon Race Review

Race: Brooksie Way Half Marathon
Official Time: 1:54:56, 8:47 pace (new PR)
Overall Place: 780 / 2645
Division Place: 28 / 139
Sex Place: 205 / 1316
The days leading up to this race were the coldest of the season so far: rainy with highs in the forties and winds gusting to 50 mph. Sunday, however, turned out to be perfect running weather albeit a little breezy: temps in the upper 40s to start and rising to near 60F by the finish, full sun, and a wind out of the north of 10-16 mph.  There was a half marathon run/walk, a 5K run/walk, and a 1 mile fun run.  The start and finish for the races was on the campus of Oakland University, near Meadowbrook Hall.

Lets start with my only complaint about the race: PARKING.  Oh my word.  We spent the night at my brother and sister's house, who live less than 5 miles from the race start.  We left at 6:40 am for an 8:00 start (I had wanted to leave by 6:30, but we were running behind).  We parked at 7:30.  Not ideal, but I was coping.  It was only a short walk to the start, and there were no lines for the porta potties, so I wasn't feeling too rushed.  Then they made the announcement around 7:45 that the start would be delayed until 8:05 since traffic was backed  up for miles (all the way to the expressway).  Shortly after, another announcement that we would be delayed a little longer until 8:15.  Overall, everything worked out fine, but I feel like races should start when they say they are going to.  Hopefully the organizers learned a few things with their "record numbers" and can come up with a more efficient parking plan, because funneling everyone through one entrance single file into a large field wasn't working.  Generally, I am just glad I wasn't one of those sitting in their car at 7:59 freaking out, trying to figure out if I should run for the start or not.

As I said - no lines for the porta potties at 7:35.  AMAZING.  I ended up going again at like 7:55, and only had to wait behind about 5 people, so still not bad (I really like to make sure my bladder is empty).  Temps were chilly so I had some sweats on, and I was able to wait right near the start/finish with Josh until 5 minutes before the start.  I stripped off the layers and then I went and snaked into the corral and Josh found a spot in the starting chute to watch from.  The corral was very well marked with balloons for the different races (that matched your bib), and pace signs were very visible.

We were off, and the first few miles were uneventful.  The course is pretty hilly:  it starts with a rolling downhill for the first 4 miles, followed by a net 400 foot rolling climb between miles 5 and 10.  There are a few more smaller hills, then we finish on a gradual downhill with the wind at our backs.  Most of miles 4 and 6 are on packed dirt/gravel trails; not a lot of passing room, but I didn't have any issues.  I felt good, so I kept a pretty good pace right off the bat:
Mile 1: 8:44
Mile 2: 8:36
Mile 3: 8:33
Mile 4: 8:36
Mile 5: 8:45

Around mile 5.5 I saw my parents - they were waiting just after the Clinton River Trail, before downtown Rochester.  It was great to see them and they were wonderful cheerleaders, giving me a little extra boost of energy (Josh stayed at the start/finish since he had Lucy and road closures made it hard to drive around).  My mom said afterwards she was really impressed with my focus and it looked like I had a great stride going.  I felt good at the time, but I knew the hills were coming.  I took my Gu just before Mile 6, and continued to drink at every water station.

I really felt the climb at mile 8 (it was almost an entire mile), but overall the hills weren't as bad as I thought they were going to be.  I put my head down and powered through them, reminding myself that there were lots of downhills to recover on.  I definitely let my legs carry me through some of the downhills, letting my pace pick up quite a bit.  I crossed the 10K point in 54:10, a 8:43 pace (my best 10K time ever!).  At this point I was pretty sure I could finish under 2:00 and a PR started to cross my mind.
Mile 6: 8:59
Mile 7: 9:01
Mile 8: 9:31
Mile 9: 9:04
Mile 10: 9:05

Somewhere around Mile 10, there was a "free beer" table.  I passed, but got a good chuckle out of it.  I should mention the course was really very scenic.  The trees in Michigan are starting to turn color, we crossed the Clinton River and ran through some nice trails.  Overall, I did enjoy the course.  I will say that there were far fewer spectators than I expected, given that the race runs through some fairly densely populated areas.  I listened to music the whole time anyway, and the spectators that were out were a lot of fun.  I must have passed out over a 100 fingers worth of high 5s to kids on the course (and one cop).

There was some rough running surface somewhere around mile 11 or so - it was a packed dirt road but had a LOT of potholes and divots in it.  I really had to watch my footing and shouted for others to do the same.  I was felling really motivated to PR the closer I got to the finish, but tried to keep my stride even.  I continued to drink water at all the stops and they had electrolyte drink between miles 11 and 12.  I picked up my pace at mile 12 and motored up the last little hill to the finish.  My Garmin says I only ran 13.07 - I must have killed those tangents!
Mile 11: 8:44
Mile 12: 8:50
Mile 13: 7:56
Last .1 (.07): 7:11
New PR in sight!  I beat my previous best by over 3 minutes!

I grabbed a mylar blanket and my medal before loading up with lots of goodies.  They had water, flavored water, milk and chocolate milk, Gatorade in cups, bagels, mini boxes of Wheaties Fuel cereal, bananas, apples, cookies, popsicles and cups of apple cider.  I didn't grab a milk, but later wished I had when I realized I had no protein for recovery.  Oh well, I could only carry so much stuff.
I just finished my fifth half marathon!

Josh said the finish chute was kind of crowded, and people were bunching in making it really hard to see.  Plus he had Lucy, so she adds a whole other challenge to spectating a race.  I give the race props for its sound system - it was nice to hear all of the announcements pre-race and at the finish clearly.  There were quite a few post-race festivities, but we didn't stay to check them all out.  There were a bunch of blow-up toys for kids to play on - I'm not sure how many half-marathoners were waiting in line to jump around in a bouncy house.

Lucy tried her best to share some of my food with me, then we headed out.  There are only a few pictures of the race because we forgot the camera in the car in our hurry to get the the start, and Josh went back to get it for the finish.
That is my "I'm Happy!  I just finished a race!" face...

Overall, good race and definitely one I would consider running again.

A new Half Marathon PR!

I ran the Brooksie Way half today, and it was awesome!  The weather was nice and cool, and even though I though the course would be difficult I managed a PR.  I ran a 1:54:56, 8:47 pace; which is a >3 min PR for me!
I just finished my 5th half marathon!

I'll write up a race review tomorrow, but generally I would recommend this race.  In the mean time, its 2 weeks until marathon day, and here is how the training is going:

M 9/26: P90X Ab Ripper X 16:00; 3.35 mi exercise bike, 16:10, 12.4 mph
Tu 9/27: 5.01 easy, 45:54, 9:09 pace
W 9/28: 7.05 pace, 1:02:52, 8:55 pace
Th 9/29: 4.05 easy, 38:11, 9:26 pace (in the rain)
F 9/30: rest
Sa 10/1: rest
Su10/2:  13.1 race, 1:54:56, 8:47 pace

Total: 3.35 bike, 29.21 run

On the Go

We have a busy weekend planned, starting with a wedding yesterday.  Our friends Magen and Neil were married right here in Bay City - we didn't know how nice it was to attend a wedding a mile from your house.  All of our friends should get married at the Doubletree from now on!

Me and the Hubs, all gussied up.  It drove Josh crazy that I got multiple compliments on my "messy bun" hairdo!

The beautiful bride.  Her skirt and train were a beautiful lace overlay with a bunch of beadwork.  Gorgeous!

Some of the girls - we had such a fun night!  They had a photobooth there, so we have some awesome pictures from that as well!

Unfortunately I had to go into work to cover a quick meeting at 6:30 this morning, so Josh and I figured we would get an early start headed down to my parents for the day.  We are going to stop at Oakland University so I can pick up my race bib for the Brooksie Way half marathon on Sunday.  Then, its an afternoon of college football and family, followed by Tigers baseball at my brother and sister's house in Rochester (within a few miles of the race).

I'll be back with a race update tomorrow, but here are my football picks for the week:
10 pts: Georgia Tech over North Carolina
9 pts: South Carolina over Auburn
8 pts: Notre Dame over Purdue
7 pts: Wisconsin over Nebraska
6 pts: Alabama over Florida
5 pts: Navy over Air Force
4 pts: Virginia Tech over Clemson
3 pts: Baylor over Kansas State
2 pts: Michigan State over Ohio State
1 pt: Texas A&M over Arkansas

UPDATE:  Ugly, ugly week - but for our whole group, so I don't feel that bad.  Lots of upsets - I had inklings for Clemson and Kansas State, just couldn't pull the trigger.  I dropped one spot to 5th, but I'm still only 4 points out of 2nd.  Josh is holding onto a 4 point lead in 1st.
